Pastor

Rev. Raul Angulo

Father Raúl Angulo was born in Jatibonico, Cuba on February 14, 1946. The middle child of Judge Rafael Angulo and Mrs. Fe Padrón. He has an older brother (Rafael) who practices internal medicine in Orlando, and a sister (Lourdes Abella) who teaches religion at St. Kevin Catholic School.

He left Cuba with five cousins in June 19, 1961 as part of the Pedro Pan exodus of children from Cuba. He was send to the Catholic Home for Children in Wichita, Kansas. After his parents arrived to the United States in 1962 he joined them, and moved to Gainesville, Florida. He helped his parents open a diner in their home that fed the area Hispanic students. Later the diner became a boarding house for Cuban girls attending the University of Florida. The diner became the Spanish House Restaurant in 1972. It was sold in 1978 after he decided to study for the priesthood.

His spiritual journey started with the example of his parents who were a very religious couple. It continued in elementary school where he served as an altar server. During his high school years he began to question the faith of his parents. While in college his parents invited him to participate in a Cursillo weekend in Miami. He had a beautiful experience of God’s love, but the passions and desires of the world banished that after 3 months. After that, he didn’t set a foot in a church for ten years. In 1975 his brother in law invited him to a Business Men Retreat in Conyers, Georgia. There he had his conversion. He joined a Charismatic Prayer Group at the Catholic Student Center in Gainesville. Eventually became part of the leadership, and one day someone asked him why he had not considered becoming a priest. That started a period of discernment, he finally entered the seminary in 1979.

He did his elementary school in the Divine Pastor School in Bayamo. His high school education took placed in various towns in Cuba and the United States in the following order. Marist Brothers in Holguin; Dolores Jesuit Preparatory in Santiago de Cuba; St Gregory’s (a Benedictine Brothers High School) in Shawnee, Oklahoma; Miami Jackson High School, Miami, Florida; Gainesville High School, in Gainesville, Florida where he finally graduated. He studied two years to Central Florida Junior College in Ocala, Florida, and two years in the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he majored in Business Administration.

He entered the minor seminary St. John Marie Vianney in 1979 where he graduated with a Bachelor in Philosophy in 1981. He transferred to St. Vincent de Paul Major Seminary where he obtained a Masters in Theology in 1984. He did his diaconate year at St Louis Parish in Pinecrest, Florida, and was ordained to priesthood of Jesus Christ by Archbishop Edward McCarthy 1985 at St Mary’s Cathedral. His first assignment was at St. Patrick’s in Miami Beach (one year). His second assignment was at Immaculate Conception in Hialeah (two years), his third assignment was at St. Thomas the Apostle in South Miami (five years). He was called to be the pastor of Mother of Christ in 1993. In 1993 he attended the annual Catholic Stewardship Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Since then he has been an advocate of Stewardship as a Way of Life for this community. Here we believe that God is the giver of our time, talents and treasure. These gifts are meant to be used and shared for making the Kingdom of God a reality in our community. He believes that the future of the Church is in small Christian communities. He is a members of a Neocathecumenal Community of Mother of Christ.
